The new store is part of a nationwide expansion that includes plans to open 80 to 100 new stores over the next five years, including nine new stores in 2022, according to the company. Last week, Academy’s first-ever Virginia location became the third of those nine new stores and its 262nd location overall. The new Atlanta store is the 263rd.
Academy reported record sales during the pandemic as consumers bought up outdoor apparel, footwear and fitness gear to spend more time outside during lockdowns. In March, the company announced that 2021 had been the most profitable year in company history. In the fiscal year, the company reported $6.8 billion in revenue compared to $5.7 billion the year before.

The new Atlanta location’s opening will feature meet and greets with current and former professional athletes, including Atlanta Braves pitcher Peter Moylan, former Atlanta Legends quarterback Aaron Murray and Atlanta Dream player Monique Billings.
Academy went public in October 2020 at $13 a share. Shares were trading for around $47 Tuesday morning — slightly below the $48 a share last week.
